I've heard PMP .308 and 30-06 (bruin pakkie) should be roughly R300-R340 per 20 cartridges. Reloads could be either cheaper or more expensive depending on your components, but it is generally a little cheaper with the benefit of giving the best accuracy for your own rifle.

i own both 6.5 x 55 and .308 and while i love my 6.5 and will put it against anything you want to bring out (small to medium bore), it is not as forgiving or as universal as the .308.
if you want the best of all worlds then get both and add a .375 and .22 and you are covered for anything on earth.
if you want one rifle to do all your hunting for now, then i have to say .308.
off the shelf the 6.5 x 55 ammo is not as freely available as the .308 and it is a little bit more expensive in outlying areas. ammo off the shelf in places like Safari and Outdoor its sometimes the same price but more often than not it a little bit cheaper.
when reloading its a little cheaper.

I have a howa 1500 I hunt bushpig with and I have never had a problem! fantastic rifle. I use 168grain SP PMP.
