Default General Walls and Margaret Thatcher correspondence

In 1979, the British forced both sides in the Rhodesian War to attend the Lancaster House conference and, at that conference, forced agreement for a cease-fire and for so-called free elections.

At Lancaster House, General Walls expressed his deep reservations as to whether or not the Nkomo and Mugabe forces would allow free and fair elections or whether they would simply go on an orgy of intimidation of voters.

Thatcher reassured Walls and promised him direct access to her during the cease fire / election period. She told him to contact her if the wheels came off so she could sort the problem out.

There have been rumours, since 1980, that he did contact her and that she just brushed him off.

The documents below come from Hugh Bomford of the Rhodesian Services Association in New Zealand. He believes in their authenticity since it confirms a personal conversation that he had with General Walls in April 2003.

In other words, it is as we always thought – Britain was not committed to facilitating a just conclusion to the Rhodesian War; she just wanted the Rhodesian problem off her hands and regarded the resultant cost to the Rhodesian population to be of no consequence.

…and, thus, did Mugabe steal an election and put Zimbabwe on course for where it is today.

(I would add, on a personal note, that I was guarding a polling station during the 1980 election and I, personally, saw evidence of how Mugabe had intimidated the population into voting for him.)

    Perfidious Albion had struck again.

Tells a sad story. Not that there was a lot of wiggle room for "the Whites" - Down the river we went. Not so merrily it turns out.
