    Default Remington 700 SPS 308

Hi, I'm in the process of buying a Remington 700 308 SPS. The one with the bull barrel.
Any advice or knowledge on the model???

Nice rifle! Comes with a Hogue overmoulded stock which is nice to hold on to. Stock is a bit flexible, and if you use a bipod, downwards pressure could cause the fore end to touch the barrel. I cleared my Hogue barrel channel out to eliminate this problem. Replaced the trigger with a Jewel.

Could'nt resist this one. We got 5 the other day - all now sold. Broke in the barrel only, molyslip on the sear, lowered the pull to 3lbs and it put 4 shots into .42" at 100m. 168gn Sierra Match Kings with 38gn S335. Kind of impressive for first time out. Seems like it is going to be real good value for money. Will play some more with 155 and 165 - 170 heads but the potential seems to be there.

Should retail about R11000 but there aren't any left at Formalito. Only 15 came in and there are no more available. Remington only made a limited run as I understand it. Pity.

    Silver Bullet,
How long is the leade (throat) in the barrel?
I read on some US rifle forums that Remington were cutting longer leades into the newer rifles to prevent reloaders seating the bullet into the lands. Apparently they were doing this to prevent further litigation: some reloaders would jam the bullet into the lands, increasing pressures and damaging the rifles. Then these idiots would end up with a lawsuit against the company and they were getting sick & tired of it.

    Thomas,
I don't know. My one has a tight chamber which does not bother me. I'll check out the leade later today but I have a suspicion it might be on the longer side.

For what it is worth, the leade seems to be fully engaged at 2.300" from the breach face

That doesnt seem overly long, considering case length is 2.047". Did you measure with a case comparator?

No, I just took along head, seated it out, inked it and kept seating it until the bolt just finally pushed it in. Then measured the touch ring from the case base.

    As unsophisticated as that
