    They have a reputation for being not being the most accurate, but they're pretty tough and for the last few years, they've been made with heavier barrels, which has helped a lot. So it'll never be a great target rifle, but it's a fairly rugged little general purpose gun.

    As I understand it, back before they all started becoming called ranch rifles, there were really two versions – the standard and the ranch rifle, the latter having scope mounting grooves along the top of the receiver and being more accurate than the standard version.

    one downside to the ruger mini is magazine availabity. apparently there are big reliability issues when using aftermarket mags, and originals are rare and expensive

    Is the Mini14 supported parts wise by the Ruger importers?

    It may be important at some stage when there is an ammo mishap.

    The parts are no problem. Guns and bows has tons of spares. Just no mags!

    Then the Mini14 is viable - just look for one with enough mags included.
