How data hungry is that app?

Not data hungry at all. Maps work offline.

There's an app called Torque Pro which actually primarily displays engine info on your phone, but it also has a Track Recorder plugin that takes video as you drive. I use it because it's all-in-one, meaning I have all my engine parameters onscreen, but I'm also recording everything that's happening in front of me.

Don't forget that you'll also need an OBD adaptor to get engine info from Torque.

Just don't buy the ones going for R50. They're garbage. Good ones retail from R200+. But they're not required if you're just going to be using the track recorder as a dashcam with GPS speed and bearing displays.
