    Default Heroes trust Streamlight

For over 10 years we have been marketing Streamlight stuff. Way back there were only 3 quality torches – MagLite, SureFire P6 and the Streamlight Scorpion.

Now, there’s a new torch out almost everyday, some crap, others good.

For us the Far East stops at Durban but, having said that, a lot of the Streamlight components are made in China and assembled in the US by ….cans.

Streamlight has always been a more upmarket quality brand, also launching many new products every year. Amazing what the sheer size of the US market can do for product innovation!

Certainly the Streamlight product range is far too big for a small market like ours but they do have some very specialised stuff.

Like the HID LiteBox – 3350 Lumens, yes that is 3350!

So, and we hope of interest to you guys, here are a few of the new Streamlight tactical and other useful lights:

The new PolyTac comes with Xenon and LED bulbs and is in direct competition with the SureFire G2’s. Yes, you’ve guessed it, it has a polymer body. The PolyTac Xenon’s performance is identical to the renowned Scorpion but with a price tag of only R355 and that includes a spare bulb!

The PolyTac LED features a C4 LED and frankly, the performance is outstanding for its package. 120 lumens and with an excellent beam pattern which Streamlight have always been recognised for. Sometimes it is not always about Lumen, reflector design plays a huge part.

PolyTacs have a no nonsense momentary or constant on switch, ideal for weapons mounting - price R445. And no strobe feature, thank you!

We sell a lot of Fenix torches (one of the better brands to come from the other side of Durban) and quite honestly we only see a marginal difference between the 120 Lumen PolyTac and the 220 Lumen PD30.

It is not always simply a case of shoving in more horse power, Streamlight do a thorough engineering job, bulb, reflector and electronics in a real performance package.

Another interesting, good value torch is the MultiOps. Running off 3 AAA batts in a side by side cartridge, the MultiOps has a C4 LED; 5 UV LEDs (great for checking dandruff, leaks and fake notes); a laser pointer good for 100m and exercising the dog; a wrist strap and a belt pouch, all for R455. Not designed as a tac light (but could be used as one) it has some very good industrial applications

Also dandy is their little Nano Light (LED) for R85, every key ring should have one, and their MicroStream (high flux LED) for the larger key ring at R210.

Check them all out on www.streamlight.com

So, you might be wondering that with all these new LED illuminators why do manufacturers still push out incandescent bulbs?

Cost is still an issue. And peace of mind - at least you can change a conventional bulb without recourse to the manufacturer.

And, if you are a professional with NV gear, IR filters do not work with LEDs, really!

If all else fails, use a bigger mousetrap

Thanks to Silver Bullet I had the opportunity to play with a LED PolyTac for about a week.

I like the little polymer light a lot.

Lighting wise and price wise it compares well to my Olights of similar size although the PolyTac is specced at 120 lumens and the Olights I compared it to are between 190 and 240 lumens. It is difficult to discern a major difference in output between the higher specced Olights and the PolyTac and I suspect an excellent reflector design and quality for the good beam.

The PolyTac is a bit spartan compared to the Olights that feature multi modes and pocket clips but then one must take into account that there are users who do not need multi modes or pocket clips.

Comparing the PolyTac to it's direct competition the Surefire G2 it outshines (pardon the pun) the G2 in all respects imo - it has a much better emitter than the LED G2.

The PolyTac will be a very nice weapons light or personal carry (EDC) light if you do not need a pocket clip on your EDC light.

It is a pity that it's not a 1" tube light because it means it will not fit the run of the mill 1" light mounts for rifles but not too worry as I have the Elzetta ZORM mount which can accommodate the PolyTac if one wants to use it as a weapons light.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this light! tup

    And MRST

I have a few Chinese torches with Chinese lumes of "300", my streamlight dual fuel is 350 and it blows it away by a huge margin
