There really isn't reason NOT to buy one. If you want a 7.62x51 in a reliable, proven system the FAL is hard to top. There are one or two issues with it being a 1950's design and trying to update it to 2013 standards but this does not prevent it being a nice solid, reliable platform.

There are some companies making slightly more up to date ones with aluminium frames, railed dust covers and the like, but the FAL is a nice, fun gun. IMHO the price difference between the 7.62x51, .223 and the 7.62x39 is pretty much negligible. I've seen x51 going cheaper than x39, and I get my x39 cheaper than some people advertise .223 for. It is about what you want.

I, personally, would give my left nut for a SCAR-17 with a Pmag compatible lower. What I won't give is the elebenty trillion Rand it'll cost :p The SCAR still has a couple of years to go to prove itself and you have the same issue with 7.62x51mm, but hey. If you want a FAL and enjoy shooting it then there really isn't any reason not to get one.

There is a small problem of parts and compatibility with both metric and imperial version being available, so just keep an eye on what spares you buy.

I suppose a few (myself included) might have a soft spot for the FAL since it was the first semi-auto rifle they fired. Normally while very young, and while being shouted at by somebody with a very loud voice. I still clearly remember my first range session with the FAL, and the epic opvok that those who cocked it up got (not me, yay!)
