I think the 250 is a magnum primer but it won't really matter which one you choose as long as you stick with either magnum or the standard.
If you decide to change between them you will need to start low again and work your way up.Use the one you see most in the shops
Powder with 168gr bullet i would imagine you can use S335

    Check www.somchemreload.com (official Somchem website).

Will give you an indication of powder to use and where to start.

Search the threads, most .308's seem to prefer S335.

I use s335 for all my loads.

My dad however, has an older rifle which he shortened the barrel on and for some reason that rifle prefera S341.

On another thread of mine i asked whicb powder etc and one response i got was "s335 and .308 is like peanut butter and jam".

With my rifle..a remington sps tactical 20" with 10" twist, i have to use 165/8 grain and heavier. I started at min, and loaded 1 grain increments from min to max. I found my best groupings to be at 39.5grain. However it is a bit slow.. so i am about to start over with a new chrony and move up.

I have not tested with different OAL's..

Last weekend, my dad and I shot hornady interlock 180 grain. He has the tikka t3 11" twist also .308. We both got our best groupings so far with the interlock 180 grain BTSP. And by best, i am talking about holes touching.

    My best grouping was:
    Interlock 180gr BTSP
    39.5gr S335
    Sellior n Bellot primer
    OAL 70mm

You going to have to play around and find what works in your rifle. I would say be consistent and test only one variable at a time. Test powder loads.. then different OALs..

My remington isn't bedded...and with my bipod it flexes now and touches the stock. So i temporarily shim bedded it on monday and will test saturday again. But bedding is imoprtant on the remingtons as far as i have read...

Somchem s335 is ideal for the 308. Match them with the CCI 200 primers and you're good to go. For the 155 try a 42-44 grain load.

    Hi Guys,

Apologies to revive this old thread but since time has progressed and people becoming more in tuned with their reloading skills and experience on GS is the above still the verdict for the 308 Win?

I am currently at war with myself between ball (s341) vs extruded(s335) for projectile weights ranging from 150gr-180gr. Taking price out of the equation, what is the use of each powder for the 308 Win?

I would to find out if the general consensus remains the same or if some people have switched to other powders, if so why?

My purpose is to shoot accurately at varying distances (<400m) preparing for next years hunt.

    Thanks in advance

    Use S335.

S341 is more dense, therefore case fill will be lower. Also S341 is significantly more temperature sensitive than S335 (I measured 100ft/s differences between summer and winter on identical loads). I use S335 for both 150gr and 180gr loads in my one rifle, and I have no reason to believe I can't use it in that rifle for 165gr too. In another 308 I have a very successful 165gr load using S355, but that has a 26" barrel so it can utilise the slower burning powder.
