150 to 180grain is a huge difference in minimum and maximum loads.
It would also depend on which bullet you intend to use.

Do you have a Somchem reloading booklet? Available in any gun shop.

S335 and S341 are the go to propellants for the 308.

S355 is a little on the slow side especially with 130-150gr bullets.

Hi Guys, I am new to reloading. I am looking for load data for my AR-10

    308
    18' barrel
    1:10 twist

There is data on somchems website but it is for 24" barrels - how does my shorter barrel effect the data?

I need some data for 150gr and 168gr bullets.

This is my first time loading so any advice is very much appreciated.

Here is a post from another forum.

For an example of barrel lengh vs. velocity here is a project my granddaughter did for her middle school science fair. We took a 26 inch 308 barrel, Remington factory 180 gr core loc. and cut the barrel two inches at a time to 16 inches. She used factory ammo most common in this area.

Anyway, for what its worth, here is her results.

The first col. is barrel lengh, followed by MV, 300 yard Vel

    262826fps2240
    242722fps2149
    222713fps2141
    202677fps2109
    182654fps2089
    162552fps2000

So using the somchem loads will work you will however see a drop in muzzle velocity and energy.

So use the Somchem data and do the load development with a chrony.

I did edit the original post as it is quite long. Here it is if you want to have a look. This is a US site so they are talking about US powders. http://www.sniperforums.com/forum/ca...1606?_k=5wri3f

Update on my last request. Ended up going with:

    39.5gr S335
    167gr Lapua OTM Scenars
    Lapua Brass
    Sellier & Bellot Primers

This out an AR-10, 18" barrel with suppressor on gets the following results.
    Half MOA groups and 100m
    Muzzle Velocity 2475fps

Below is a table of various load development data I've taken down for my Remington 700 SPS DM in 308. It has a 24 inch barrel with 1:10 twist. The rifle is stock except for bedding the action. The overall length of my cartridges needs to be less than 71.5mm to fit in the magazine, bullets are still some way away from the lands then. It's interesting how measurements can be so different from day to day or with different chronographs. As you can see I haven't quite got to sub MOA 5 shot groups yet.

I find these graphs quite interesting. Each point below more or less represents a 5 shot group. These are different bullets, powder, primers, cases. I think the rifle likes projectiles to come out of it at around 2600 fps

Some of my favourite loads are:

    Sierra Game King 180 grain
    40.7 grain S335 powder
    71.5 mm OAL
    Velocity 2603 fps

Here is a Game King recovered from a Kudu. High heart lung shot at 150m, found it under the skin on the other side. It has 135.8 grain left (75% weight retention)

    __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________
    Nosler Accubond 165 grain
    41.5 grain S335 powder
    71.5 mm OAL
    Velocity 2633 fps

Here is a nice group I managed to shoot with the Accubond.

And here is one recovered from a Springbok. Shot at 230m from behind. Springbok was lying down. Shot went a little low. Went in above the tail, recovered under the skin of his chest. 129.2 grain left (78% weight retention)

    • I like the S335 powder but S341 also does the job
    • Out of a 308 I'm happy to use non premium bullets in 180 grain as they come out quite slow. I wouldn't shoot a game king out of a win mag. With lighter 150 or 165 grain bullets I'd rather go with something bonded.
    • I like boat tail bullets. The Game King comes out a little faster than the Pro Hunter with the same load. Loading them is nicer. At 71.5mm they fit nicely in the neck, make contact all the way with 180 grain.

I bought some 180 grain Nosler Partitions to try next.
