Re: The secrets of pap en sous
Just stop, before you embarrass yourself even more. Meat is a main dish, but that does not make proper pap anything less. Same story goes for The Braaibroodjie.
And leeutjiestroop is what it's called. Everything else is a lie.
It's great if you're not in the mood for pap.

Re: The secrets of pap en sous
I am loving this thread.
I see pap and sous as a complete meal, although I get the concept of meat=main meal ("vis is nie kos nie, en hoender maak dit net net"), but the odd vegetarian meal does not kill one, and P+S is about the best there is.
In my book, both participants in this gastronomic endeavour need two things: time and enough salt

Re: The secrets of pap en sous
I eat Penne Arrabiata which for the unititated is simply a starch with a hot chillie tomato sauce, so yes a main dish I agree with.
Love the expression, "man card". I have found that as I have gotten older that large amounts of protein simply no longer cut it full time. Nice to have something without meat or lighter meats.
For P&S to be a standalone meal however it must be accompanied by lots of Chillie relish.
You Chillie heads ........ warm up a tin of Hot Chakalaka and throw that over pap for a real alternate treat. One too many wasted sunsets and one too many for the road .........

Re: The secrets of pap en sous
Mmmmm, at 23 you are probably right.
At 40 many will be on cholesterol tablets, blood pressure pills and the rest, some might have even had thier first bypass by then. The above mentioned protein sources suddenly become both viable and palatable alternatives, albeit a little late. Train yourself now, gets very difficult later. Thought I would stay 85kg for the rest of my life eating what I wanted ......... surprise.
As my good mate says "The best part of a heart attack is the preperation".One too many wasted sunsets and one too many for the road .........

Re: The secrets of pap en sous
I once went on a fishing trip to Namibia. After 5 days of only red fatty meat, i asked for some veg/salad, i got Chicken.
I LOVE pap and sous. I get the maid to cook it when i braai. The "sous" is made by myself.

Re: The secrets of pap en sous
Venison, dear sir. Much, much lower in cholesterol and doesn't require tons of salt hehe!
That being said, I always said that you don't need meat every day of your life. I LOVE chicken, even more than pork and fish (good thing, I guess). Crumbed chicked breasts with chutney... HMMM!!!
