They're just excellent at conservation of energy. Widely believed to be the fastest striking snake in the world at around 0.25s from their coiled position.
There are no stupid questions ........ just stupid people

Spent the weekend in Alldays, did a lot of walking and driving. Only saw one grass snake. :) And no signs of anything bigger.

Glad to see that they no longer advocate trying to ID the snake. It is largely irrelevant - you treat the symptoms, not the snake. If somebody gets hit by a car, you don't ask whether it was a Mazda or a Ford that hit him

A lightning strike earlier this week took out my gate motor control. When I took off the cover, there was the most beautiful green coloured snake coiled up on the circuit board. At just over 300mm long it really was an exquisite specimen.

Yip I agree the Mozzie season is heating up! This is the second report of a small child bitten in bed. Drought and heat are sending them into homes. We had our 1st cobra on Sunday since moving to the plot. I tried to keep the dogs away - Rotties are not good with snakes. But the J-R sneaked past me and within seconds killed the 40cm juvenile. Without an injury to the JR. Snake bitten on the head. Those dogs are amazing.

My cousin in Worcester lost 2 Dobermans to Cape Cobras in early January.

1,2 m Moz Spit Cobra and 1,8 m Egyptian Cobra this week at my house. Luckily still outside. Distinct bark from dogs alerted me. So, yes, they are out of their holes currently.

It is the dead of winter here in Texas; We had ice and snow last week. However, 100km to the west of us a 6 year old little girl playing outside got bit by 2 meter long Western Diamondback Rattle snake. It was about 15c that day; I was surprised it came out of hibernation. Got her on the ankle. It took 16 vials to counteract the poison. She is still in the hospital but doing good.
I have never seen a Rattle snake; any of the 5 species, Copperhead or Water moccasin out in the winter.

That is unusual. Perhaps out looking for warmth and food when it came across the little girl. Glad she's ok.
