I have two small kids and I must admit, this is the main reason I will NEVER get a swimming pool or allow them to swim when I am not around.

Have heard of too many stories of children drowning.

    Thanks for this though! :)

Wezza I disagree. I am very glad we have a pool and our kids are now strong swimmers because of it. When we moved here from Australia it was a big concern because our kids did not swim well despite weekly swimming lessons in oz. But one month living in a house with a pool and they are very confident in the water.

My brother in the other hand lives in a complex with no pool. Every time they come visit it is stressful for them and everyone else as we always have to watch where the kids are.

I come from a family with drownings, my sister drowned at age 3 because she asked to have her arm bands removed and went playing and jumped in the pool. So did my cousin at age 2.Since then arm bands, belly rings etc have been banned in our family. My younger brothers were all swimming before they were walking.
Your best prevention for children is to have then swimming ON THEIR OWN. Gates and nets have a place but like your home security they should not be your only measure, the final layer should be the child's ability in the water.

Thanks for the article. I have a 2 year old and 3 year old. The oldest can swim by himself, but the little one is not quite there yet, but this article reminds me that being able to swim does not equal not being able to drown.

Years ago I pulled my cousins' daughter from a swimming pool. Fortunately no damage. She was under 2 at the time.
This sort of thing impresses on one how valuable family and other loved ones are.
Stay safe, and teach them to swim early.

A child drowned last week at the Day visitor pool in KNP Letaba Rest Camp. Very sad.

Jip it happens right between people. My second last save was a 6 yr old girl drowning between two men. Both looked at her from a meter away.
To set yourself at ease a bit look at this video. It will give you a better idea of how far it can go before someone is in need of CPR. It starts at about 1;20
