Default Motivating an additional rifle in a calibre that you already have

    Hi,

    I have a 30-6 which I use with 180 - 200 grain bullets at lower velocities (2,400 fps) for bushveld hunting (<= 200m).

If I would like to aquire a .308 Win which I plan to use with lighter bullets (150 & 168 grain) at maximum velocity for long range work

Do you think that CFR would buy in to this? I have dedicated hunter status for what it is worth.

    It seems aceptable to me.

Would like to know if anyone has pulled this off?

Give them info about muzzle velocity and energy values, using the 200gr in the 30.06 and the 150gr in the .308 , maybe even using some of Gerhard Schultz's lighter HV bullets as a model. Use the argument that one bullet weight is used and that you are intimatley familiar with the trajectory of that bullet, allowing you to place your shot accurately and thereby dispatching the animal quickly. Name the animals and their respective weights which you intend hunting out to a particular distance.
Use lotsa technical stuff, even the twist of the barrel, which would stabilize a certain weight/length bullet.
Say where you intend to hunt, letters from game farms/ farm owners would also help.
Keep duplicates of everything you give them.

Other option is to state that you are hunting bushpigs with it over open sights and just state that your other rifle is scoped for longer distances and thus not usable in thick bush or at very short ranges.

This is how an SAPS friend advised to motivate for similar calibres.

I go with Kuduvark on this one! I am using the same approach to get a 303. I will be keeping it open sights and load heavy slow bullets - this is a different application COMPLETELY than for which I will be using my 308. I also have a 270 which again is motivated as a flat shooting caliber for 130gr bullets at 3000fps for the open long shots on Springbuck and Fallow Deer sized game. It is all in the motivation - get your facts straight and all should go well. Perhaps also motivate for a different twist in the barrel to stabilise heavier bullets?? I know of a friend who did this for his 308s and got both!

Good idea would be to show them photos of the .30-06 with a scope on and the .308 without scope, just make sure the .308 has open sights, if not put a 1 x 20 scope on.

    Geez,

my .30-06 would actually ake an AWESOME pig rifle.

    3.5kg, 21" barrel

Pity it is a push feed though...would not want to have to rely on a non-CRF action with an angry piggy charging down on me.

At the end of the day a 30-06 srpgf and a 308win are two different rifles!

Brad, you and I and the whole of gunsite know that but the dudes and dudettes at CFR must have it spelled out to them in such a way that they are convinced they are not the same and that you NEED both (not just want but need). It is one of the few things in South Africa that you cannot buy just because you want one - you have to show a need that is not covered by any other caliber that you have. We have to find that one thing that the 308 does that you cannot do with a 30-06 and then hammer that point with technical details and references. And then you pray!!!
