TStone, Please could you give me some pointers on what to look for in a trophy red hartebeest. I am going to shoot one in the Khalahari this year.

Firstly, make sure it is a bull, if you look at them on a regular basis this is easy but if it is the first time you see one it can be difficult. The tip of the penis sheath is easy to see, unless of course, the grass is very long. Also a bull's horns are more massive than a cow's.
Bulls in their prime will have a dark red color, cows are a paler color.

To judge the horns you need to get a look at the head from the front, the horns should be thick and high, and from the side, the tips need to be long.
If you look closely there is a difference in the shape of the horns, between individual bulls, this can make a difference in length but is difficult to describe.

They are not the easiest of animals to judge horn length but a mature bull with thick, heavy horns and long tips will make for a good looking mount.

A lone hartebeest is most often a mature bull but there are exceptions. A true trophy animal will stand out in a herd.

I realise that this is all a little vague but the only way to learn is to spend a lot of time looking at actual hartebeest. Look at photo's in hunting, and wildlife, magazines this should give you an idea.

One thing I've read about sexing red hartebeest is that the male's horn tip runs parallel to the ground whereas the female's horns are at a 45 degree angle. Can anyone confirm this?

Mostly, but not always. I've shot some very big bulls where the horn tips were at an angle.

Good looking bull. A red hartebeest is on my next year list.
