Re: SAPS lost 10'000 plus firearms.
I would like to see the the same stat for the military.
About 6 months ago there was a small general dealer robbed /shot up close to the farm. Anyhow we got there late as we were on our way to the farm as we drove past it and not responding to it.
We stopped there and asked the normal things what/when/where as normal curious residents and active CPF members. The constable there told us the empty shell casings recovered were all military.
Not saying that it was stolen weapons might have been old surplus stock(not sure if they even sell surplus stock). Someone might be able to assist here that knows more about that.
But my guess the military stat would look worse than the police one.

Bearing in mind they aren't all 9mmP either. That's a rather substantial amount of fire power in the hands of criminals.

Maybe to prevent illegal firearms we should disarm the SAPS?
Out of the over 10 000 that went missing, how many criminal negligent charges were opened?

I will be surprised if there was any serious action taken, I would actually be happy if the responsible person was just docked the retail value of the replacement firearm from his/her pay as a default action, and then the circumstances would dictate further sanction or not.

Re: SAPS lost 10'000 plus firearms.
I think that is an understatement of numbers. I don't think they really know how many were handed in. I base my statement on the below account:
I do firearm motivations and was recently contacted by a guy to assist with his application.
His story was that he handed in his firearm as he believed the SAPS would take care of it and destroy it accordingly. He was however recently contacted by the SAPS to inform him that they were cleaning the office and found his .38 special in a cabinet. They wanted to know why they had possession of it as they could not find a case number linked to it.
Needless to say he realized the error of his ways and decided to licence it.
I thus do not think proper record is or was ever kept of firearms handed in.
