Default To vote or not to vote.......

I'm just wondering what the general consensus is.

I'm an honors student at university and I have been dumbfounded by the number of academic students who claim they are not going to vote!

In my opinion, if you haven't made an attempt to change things and tried to be part of the solution, then you are simply adding to the problem and your rights to complain and bitch about it have been revoked!

So seeing as our national voting is to be held on Wed, and bearing in mind this forum is probably comprised of a more educated population....
    I just wonder.
    Any comments, opinions, debates?
And how's about the no of voters from overseas? The impact this makes for the future?
If you're a true blooded South African prepared to face all the future problems head on.

Voting is a must. It is the most important day for our country every five years. It is a day that will determine the economic direction we take in the future, as well as how our rights and privileges will be affected or attacked. Not voting when you have the opportunity to do so is quite disgusting.

Much discussion about this already on the forum. Consensus is that if you don't vote, you support the ANC.

I truly hope your student friends have a different vision for this country than the current situation. If they sit on their behinds, they'll get the same raw deal all lazy people get - a worse outcome than is possible had they done something.

I do not agree with this much quoted view. Everyone who lives in SA has a right to bitch and moan as much as they like, whether the vote or not. Voting, or not voting, does not constitute a mouthpiece. One could stretch that theory and say if you complain and vote for the ANC, you have no right to continue complaining about them. Or if you vote for the DA, then stop moaning about them etc etc. Politicians will always be accountable to the nation.

Let's say you have a pool of 10 voters.

6 vote for party A, 4 vote for party B

    A gets 60% of the votes, B gets 40%.

Lets say they vote again, but this time, one decides not to vote at all.

6 vote for party A, and 3 vote for party B

A now gets 66,6% of the votes, and B gets 33,3%.

See why they say if you don't vote, it counts as a vote for the winning party? It's because you decrease the voting pool.

To vote or not? That's easy.

Are you thinking of voting ANC or EFF? Then don't vote, it's a kak idea.
    Otherwise, vote.

Try explaining this to folks when 5 out of 4 people are bad at fractions. Add to that the general lack of interest... <kotz>

So you are saying 125% of people are bad at fractions?

No, 137%. . Just kidding. It was said with tongue in cheek humour. But very few people can do basic math. I have tried explaining that concept to a few folks but numbers bore them.
