Re: .450 Rigby or .458 Express
Non of the two will fit on a k98 action. Your easiest way is to buy a CZ 550 or Brno 602 and and have the chamber reamed out to your desired calibre.

You can go Win Mag on a K98 or maybe a Lott

Re: .450 Rigby or .458 Express
I was looking at the Express and I shot 3 of them, besides the slightly added length and much more expensive brass, I could not see what made it that much better than the Lott. So I settled on the Lott and I must say I really enjoy it. 500g at 2200fps will drop anything that walks or crawls.
not dissing the Express at all, but the price of the brass was 30% more than that of the Lott and you battle to find it.

Re: .450 Rigby or .458 Express
May I ask why not 404 Jeff or 416 Rigby ?
IMHO I prefer both these calibers to the two you are discussing here

Dritz, about the brass of the express ? Where did you shop for them, I bought PMP 3" brass for R12 a pop. That's not expensive. As for performance, the express was never designed to out perform the Lott, just to run at lower pressure and get beter performance with South African powders

Re: .450 Rigby or .458 Express
Why not a 416? A lot more pleasant to shoot than the 458 IMO. Let me add that I do not own a 450 and have neither shot one, so the comments relate only to the 458.

Re: .450 Rigby or .458 Express
You can't build either calibre on a 98 action, for two reasons (1) the action isn't long enough and (2) the case heads are too big for the 98 bolt face. A 98 bolt face can be opened up to take the 458 Express case but that doesn't help when the action is too short. The only practical way to get a 458 x 3" Express rifle is to buy a CZ 458 Win which has the magnum action and have the chamber lengthened. Its a simple job done by hand with a special reamer on an extension rod. There are a few dozen 458 Express rifles and most are converted CZs. It would work equally well on other magnum action 458 Win rifles but I don't know of any.
As regards the calibre, before you decide you should read the rationale of its design by Prof Badenhorst who invented it. I was reading it again only yesterday. I also had some personal correspondence with Prof Badenhorst when I was considering building one. He calls it the poor man's Rigby because, with a 450 grain bullet it duplicates the 416 Rigby performance out to 200 metres. It was designed as a charge stopper because of the well known shortcomings of the 458 Win, and less known shortcomings of the 458 Lott. It is a lot cheaper both rifle and ammo than the 450 Rigby. If you'll e mail me at boothroyd@polka.co.za I'll send it to you. Trust me, it essential reading for the decision you are about to make.

Re: .450 Rigby or .458 Express
As 458Exp points out, brass is made by PMP, so it shouldn't be too difficult to obtain. It is of course likely that few dealers will stock it as it is a specialised calibre and probably only a few dozen rifles. Prof Badenhorst developed the 458 Express because the desired performance could only be wrung out of the Lott with (I think) S321 which is a ball powder that cakes and is not too stable in hot conditions. S335 an extruded powder is more stable but the 458 Lott case won't hold enough of it. So the Lott is not equal to the Express for intended purpose.

Re: .450 Rigby or .458 Express
Camdix in Krugersdorp currently have CZ550s in .458 Win @ R17k - at that price it's not worth messing around with what would be an expensive custom job. Then ream it to 3"/Express, a simple R500 gunsmith job, and use whatever ammo takes your fancy or is available.
