    Default .458 Lott

I acquired a .458 Lott and shot it this weekend. fighting0035

Quite an experience as it generates about 2times+ the recoil pressure of my 9,3x62.

I am a sissy and used a PAST shoulder recoil pad. By about the 6th shot I had a slight discomfort in the back of my jaw.

This is the biggest caliber I have shot to date and it puts "recoil" in perspective hpy71

    Ag lekker!!

A couple of months ago I had the opportunity to shoot about ten shots with a friend's Ruger No. 1 in .416 Rigby.

Afterwards my sinusses felt quite open.

Can you compare the 458 Lott to Kynoch in 577/450? ???

    9,3x62 generates around 32ft/lb of recoil energy with 286gr bullet @ 2350 ft/s and 8lb rifle.

    .375H&H Mag generates around 46ft/lb of recoil energy with a 300gr bullet @ 2600ft/s and 9lb rifle.

.458 Lott generates around 68ft/lb of recoil energy with 465gr bullet @ 2325ft/s and 9lb rifle.

.577 Nitro Express generates around 81ft/lb of recoil energy with 650gr bullet @ 2175ft/s and 11.5lb rifle.

I must add that I did not shoot the 458 Lott from the bench.

Right, that is proof that I'll be speaking to my old man for giving me the 577 to shoot at age 7!!! md217

Thanks for that Khumba, good info; was looking at the 9.3x62 a while back, but settled on the 375H&H instead; liked the versatilty of it and good to see such a comparison.

    Hi Boerbok

    375 H&H
I am dealer go GS Custom in JHB

    We have a 265g HV doing 2,900 and a 200g HV that does 3,300.
That means you have a 375 that shoot flatter than a 300 Winmag!!

    BTW a 40g GS HV does 3,700 out of a LM 4
    - 6mm armoured steel penetrated out to 75m :-)

See my post on the .577 Tyrannosaur which generates around 115 ft/lb of recoil energy.

    Double Tap,

that was probably the deciding factor for me; I did not want to go for the 30's, while the 338's sounded like availability might be a problem. Settled on the 375H&H, as the 200gr is exactly what I need for a windy day out to 300m, with the heavier bullets perfect for Kudu in Graaff-Reinet!

458 Lott, mm, i came ow but so close to buying a Steyr Propietry cartridge which apparently is yet to be commercially available but there are plans to do so, it is the .460Steyr, necked down .50BMG case, its chambered in thier HS460 which i almost bought, untill i found out that the casings were going to cost R380.00 per casing, yes per brass and that the desired bullet head weighed in at a 600 degal head  cfd89

surfice to say that the powder they used to work up a load i had never heard of before, so i gave it a pass, ow and the rifle was not cheap either, R49,500.00 landed in the country, here is a pic, just in case anyone is interested...
