Just did some provisional calculations on Quickload and a 150 grain Impala will work nicely with S355 propellant and a COL of 82.00 mm.
Should stabilise considering that this is a really long for weight bullet. 2800 fps is achievable with this combination. With a COL of 82.00mm you will still have 8.33mm of bullet shank in the neck. Chamber pressure at 2800 fps is still 10 000psi below SAAMI max pressure. No reason not to try. Give it a go if that's what you want to achieve.

Dale , not to be bias , but I would point out that any rifle will perform excellent with Impala bullets, it is a great bullet, it reload easy, it shoots straight and flat, is inexpensive/cheap and you got excellent after sale service from Kobus Du Plessis. My .375 H&H Magnum I build came to a stage where I need to zero the v-express sight and ghost ring sight..I tried conventional shelf ammo, 300 gn /270 gn Winchester and other brands..my rifle grouped lousy...I then tried Impala 270 RPNF bullets and immediately I shot excellent groupings...with the excellent service from Kobus Du Plessis ...you can only win ....I will not easily shoot any other bullet in all my rifles...take in account I will not shoot at a antelope/animal in a herd...the bullet will go clean through, injuring other animals as well..keep that in mind when shooting /hunting with Impala bullets....

    Gert.

I have no prejudice or bias towards Impala bullets. The whole point of my post was to answer the op's question regarding the performance of a 150 grain bullet in his 8x57. My point was simply that if he wanted to shoot 150 grain bullets he would be best off using a monometal to achieve the length of bullet to stabilise and to have sufficient bullet seating depth. The OP is at liberty to use whatever bullet he chooses be it Impala, Barnes, GS, Rhino Penetrator etc etc.

Dale , my apologies, maybe I state my remark incorrectly...what I should have said is that I concur with you regarding the use of Impala bullets since they are long bullets and will work in the 150 gn weight with the 1:9.45 twist...As I pointed out Impala bullets seems to work in most hunters rifles, it definitely worked for me and using it would work in Louis`s 8x57JS Mauser I am sure will give you excellent results...Dale if possible will you forward me the re-loading detail you worked out for the 8x57 JS? I really would appreciate it much...

I would like to hear from you...kind regards

    Gert

I personally struggled with the Impala LWHV (150 gr) in my 8x60s Mauser. Everything about the loads were impressive - except the grouping, +2" on a 100m (I'll admit the that my reloading skills might be to blame, or even the "moer" behind the stock ) I also have an odd suspicion that mine is different from the other 8x60s Mausers that might add to my against the flow results.

I found the longer and heavier bullets just group easier. Best results were from 196 gr and up. That said, Impala now has a 200 gr RNFP that might just work for me.

Impala does have reloading data for the 8x57 on their page that you might find useful. (I have found that their loads are always much "softer" than mine, might be that they are just cautious or I'm just a bit crazy.)
I have no doubt that your 8x57 will work up to 300m. The biggest factor at that distance will be you.

    Hallo Moomin
Have you ever tried lighter bullets than 150 gn in your 8x57 JS?

    Hi Gert

I have not tested anything below 150 grains in my 8x60s. Have not seen any before but that does not mean much.

The problem I will have with below 150 will probably be seating depth.

    (I don't have a 8 x 57)

    You are correct Moomin.

In terms of the Impala bullets the length of the 150 grain bucket is 33.32mm and the 120 grain Impala bullet is 27.43mm. A difference of 5.89mm. If you try seat the 120 grain bullet at SAAMI COL of 82.00mm then you will only have 2.44mm of the bullet in the case neck versus 8.33mm with the 150 grain. You could of course seat the 120 grain deeper in the neck but it means you are going to have a bullet jump of between 7 to 10mm.

I received totally different bullet lengths and data and stuffed it up on 3 rounds that wont chamber. Also only received one powder weight per point namely 44 he for 150 and 40 for the 200gr. My number is 0614262357. Would appreciate any help.
