    Question Competency & License costs

    Hi,

I am a newbie on this forum, so apologies is this has been already tackled. I searched and read through many threads, but couldn't find a proper answer, hence this thread.

I wish to get a handgun and was directed to a gun-store owner here in Durban who arranges the entire competency & licensing process.
He quoted R2500 which seems steep.

When I queried the amount, he said that it includes:
    - Manuals
    - The training for competency (These 2 are R1500)

    - Applying for Competency (This is R500)

    - Motivation for License
    - Applying for License (These 2 are R500)

If I wish to do competency for all 4 instead of only handgun, then the training and manuals would be R2500, while each competency application would be R500, so R2500 + (R500x4) = R4500 + R500 for handgun licence = R5000!

    Am I being ripped off?
    What alternatives do I have?
Anyone reliable in Durban who could do a good job at a better price?

Yes, you probably are being ripped off.

All 4 comps should be about R2000

You can apply for your own comp and lic.

There is an extensive thread with comp and lic application info, look through them and create your own motivation.

Holy crap!!!! As Andycap stated all 4 your comps should amount to around R2000. Application for competency cert from cops is R 70 and app for License is R140. Dont let that guy convince you that it costs R5000

Yoh, ja, that sounds hectic. I have just written my competency, and all in I paid R1550. The 4 practical subjects was R1200 and the law subject was R350. This included range fees and using their guns and ammo for the range work (granted it was all .22 except for the shotgun, and that was also just 2 rounds).

Only thing that does not help you much is the fact that this was done in Pretoria...

In addition to what SAS said, it's R140 PER license app and R70 PER comp app.

Manuals generally cost in the region of R600. Whoever quoted either doesn't want your business (by scaring you away with high prices) or is just too narrow minded to realise the interwebs is full of answers and alternate solutions ;)

I just called iHawu Shooting Range, as they were recommended on this forum.
They quoted me R3040 for the 4 competencies.
