Apparently it did not occur to a number of the world's major airlines that flying over a conflict area where one of the parties has established a pattern of shooting down aircraft with SAMs might result in a downed airliner. Just how damned stupid can you get? This is fairly and squarely the fault of Malaysian airlines. Though to my amazement I see that only the Brits and the French are smarter than the rest.

Absolutely. Just because it isn't an official No Fly Zone doesn't mean it's a good idea to fly over it. The extra fuel and go around...everyone else is doing it now. Horse bolted, stable closed, too late.
