Default Pump action cleaning regime & equipment

I'm about to take over my dad's Mossberg 500 shotgun. His cleaning kit dates from the 80's and I would like to replace it. Now what puzzles me is that he has a cleaning rod yet you are supposed to clean your rifle from the breech end and not the muzzle end. Is it not the same for a shotgun because it is a smooth bore?
    Thanks

The barrel detaches. Thus a bit different than a bolt action rifle.

The shottie comes apart totally. Easier to clean, more difficult to put back together.

    Many more parts.

I did the following when it came to cleaning my pump action (Fabarm SDASS).

    1. Break shotgun down and remove barrel.
    2. Soak patch in eezox and push through with brass jag (the pro-shot one that is sized for the barrel is good)
    3. Allow eezox to go to work.
    4. Repeat step 2 as many times as necessary until barrel is mostly clean.
    5. Bronze brush through the barrel to loosen up stubborn leading (optional)
    6. Repeat step 2 until you are happy barrel is sufficiently clean
    7. Degrease and clean receiver
    8. Degrease and clean bolt
    9. Degrease and clean shell tube (optional, watch out for the follower and spring that will try to escape)
    10. Degrease pump handle guide rods
    11. Oil/grease receiver, bolt and guide rods.
    12. Pull a cloth lightly soaked in eezox/barricade/oil through the shell tube (optional)
    13. Re-assemble shotgun
    14. Wipe down with eezox/barricade/oil/rust preventative.

The reason why i refer to eezox in the cleaning of the barrel is that I found it to be very effective.

What I also noticed is after the 5/6 time I followed the above routine, the leading in the barrel became less severe, and cleaning of the barrel became a far easier task.

I am not certain as to why, but it could be assumed that the eezox was starting to build up a layer or sorts that made it harder for the lead to adhere to the barrel.

I only noticed this thread now, the title got me all excited until I read the posts. . . . I have a deep personal issues about terminology, especially so when the subject matter concerns firearms.

Before you can have a REGIMENT you will at least need a few PLATOONS, made up of SECTIONS, and when you have enough platoons you will eventually have a COMPANY. If you have enough of those you may end up with a REGIMENT.

A REGIMEN is a term commonly used to describe the procedure and schedule for performing maintenance and cleaning of firearms.

"regime" or maybe even "regimen" but definitely not "regiment".

But considering the number of firearms some of the members on this forum have, I am sure some of them wouldn't mind having a Regiment, or even a small platoon dedicated to cleaning and performing preventative maintenance on their firearms.

Somewhere between Regiment and Division I think, but I might be mistaken, since I last saw David Niven in a WW2 movie my liver has had to deal with a lot.
