what spotting scope ?
What spotting scope do you use to see 6mm holes on white paper at 300 meters ?
[ I have a Vanguard 15-60x, which works fine up to around 100 meters, but it won't do the job at 300 or even 200 ]

Re: what spotting scope ?
I have a Swarovski ATS65 with 20-60x eyepiece. Very clear. It helps to have a clean, uncluttered target (I use orange square on white A4 paper, size of square varies on distance I'm shooting at. In mirage conditions I normally use it at 30x magnification.
Sturdy tripod is a bonus.

Re: what spotting scope ?
Bring a target to my place, we can head to the veld (5min) with a range finder and see if it works at 300m.
I bought a Celestron Ultima 80 which is 20-60X. Remember it remains difficult to mechanically stabilise any scope, irrespective of optics, at high magnifications. Here is when objective lesn size is your friend, a minimum of 80mm with 100mm being preferable. I paid R3k 12 months ago, never used it at 300 but does work at 200m.One too many wasted sunsets and one too many for the road .........

Re: what spotting scope ?
Thanks Andrew, I'll take you up on your offer. I'm waiting for an item to come into stock and then buy rifle, scope, proper spotter, dies, etc., all at the same time, hopefully within a month.
I'm looking at a Celestron as well, 90mm , which is in my budget :

My vanguard has high magnification and not really much else - at 100m, I battle to see .223 holes even though the target takes up more than half the viewfinder.
If you can vouch for your Celestron quality, then that's what I needed to know, thanks.

Re: what spotting scope ?
DON'T buy the reflector scope you are looking at. It has a fixed magnification of 39X (for most applications it is too much) and you would need to buy a variable eyepiece which I think was R 800 when I last looked.

Re: what spotting scope ?
Keep the scope. Use orange peel targets at 300m
