    Default Black powder sources

I'm hoping the forum admins would consider adding a sticky for a source of Black powder. It seems very scarce with my only source at the moment being AEL at R790 / 500g. Sheesh, that is a bit much if you want to load 150 gn per shot for target practice.

NSN earlier indicated that they might also stock Black powder and the occational Sanadex that still exists (but last I checked they were all out), so it would be nice to have a thread keeping track of anyone else supplying any form of Black powder or substitute.

    Regards
    Paul

    Hi Paul

AEL seems to be the only source of black powder. Sannedex is not being made any more.

If I need to get powder I have to do a 600km round trip to be able to get 1kg as per my permit.

I do not shoot my BP rifles very often because of the price which sucks big time

I know very little about black powder guns but I used to make my own black powder firecrackers when I was younger and it was relatively easy with items bought from the chemist and hardware store.
Speaking from ignorance here so I don't know if there are any legal issues with making your own.

Please do not manufacture your own BP. It's both dangerous and illegal.

AEL is the only company which can supply BP now.

Hell no. Don't even go there.
Google pipe bomb finger images if you want to consider making your own.
BP is explosives and is handled under the Explosives Act. Manufacturing your own is a bad idea.

Thanks everyone, the consensus seems to be AEL is the place to go.

Vortek, I'll stop complaining about having to drive 60km to pick up BP.

I hear you, the distance is a killer, but if you consider shooting my 6 shooter costs around R3.50 - R4.50 all inclusive per shot (mostly due to powder cost) it is very expensive. My mind is casually ignoring the cost of shooting a BP shotgun...

Guys excuse my ignorance here but what is it that restricts the import of powders from the U.S for instance ...is it special shipping...ITAR...cost...??

Perhaps because it's explosives? Probably a series of import restrictions on those.
