    Just followed my own advice and looked at the act again. The definition for "Air gun" is actually:

    ‘‘airgun’’

    means any device manufactured to discharge a bullet or any other projectile-
    a)of a calibre of less than 5.6mm (.22 calibre); or
    b)at a muzzle energy of less than 8 joules (6ft-lbs),
    by means of compressed gas and not by means of burning propellant
    which means that paintball guns might still be included (I've no idea what the muzzle energy of a paintball gun is).

    It is legal only if you use a 338 caliber or bigger. You have to use such a big calliber so that you can make as much noise as possible, so that the police can come and have a look at what you are doing. Use this advice at your own peril.

    Thanks guys, maybe I should've mentioned air rifle in my heading. And yes I did recently receive my licence for a hunting rifle, but I did my competency 5 years ago, so maybe time to refresh the memory.

    Sorry for the multi-posting! Another definition:

    ‘‘firearm’’

    means any—
    a)device manufactured or designed to propel a bullet or projectile through a barrel or cylinder by means of burning propellant, at a muzzle energy exceeding 8 joules (6 ft-lbs);
    b)device manufactured or designed to discharge rim-fire, centre-fire or pin-fire ammunition;
    c)
    device which is not at the time capable of discharging any bullet or projectile, but which can be readily altered to be a firearm within the meaning of paragraph (a) or (b);
    d)
    device manufactured to discharge a bullet or any other projectile of a calibre of 5.6mm (.22 calibre) or higher at a muzzle energy of more than 8 joules (6 ft-lbs), by means of compressed gas and not by means of burning propellant; or
    e)
    barrel, frame or receiver of a device referred to in paragraphs (a), (b), (c) or (d), but does not include any device contemplated in section 5;
    This means that a paintball gun would either be an airsoft gun or a firearm, but either way, you may not shoot it in a built-up area.

    Paintball gun is not a firearm as per the Act as it is not licensed. They do however make a noise that the neighbours might object to.

    An airgun is also not a firearm but you may not shoot it in your garden as well. Ps, a painball gun is much louder than an airgun.
