You've got exactly the right idea - think we just need to be more consistent with the summary. And we need to do it in MS Word so we can integrate it all and edit it easily etc.

I would think Excel, so that we can easily make up nice graphs and pie-charts and other visual stuff.

    Ok, I would suggest:

Split the data into victim and attackers; weapons used by each, shots fired, injuries and/or fatalities sustained by each, property lost/damaged/stolen etc.

Also capture location by province, municipality etc., type (farm, smallholding, house, flat...), security features (alarms, electric fences...)

This is exactly the kind of thing I have been wanting to get involved in.

Having just started a new job I am under time pressure but I will gladly help where I can.

As in point (3) I will look for cases where guns were used in self defense online and post them here.

WZ, any other pointers? What else can I do that is of use?

In perfect world JS4, truth is most of the info comes from news articles, so 2nd or 3rd hand accounts. The detail is just not there.
Lets get a database setup and if the info is there we can populate the fields. But I dont think they need to be mandatory.

For me stories like the 15-07-2014 Witpoortjie, South Africa, where the mother is quoted and thanks the sheepdog
or the 07-08-2014 Greytown, South Africa where the famers wife fights on even after her husband is shot, are very powerful.
But in truth each story needs to be told and build toward an over whelming case showing private firearms save lives.

Other questions that I had while doing the collecting and writting are:
What do we call the BG's? Bad Guys, Man/Men, Hijacker/Robber Suspect ect?
What do we call the victims of the crimes?
Are we allowed to quote the news articles?
We should atleast have an external source listed, so it does not look like we making it up.
Who is our target audience? The general public? The govenment? Gunowners wake up and suppport your rights call?

    Never said they should be.

Leave unpopulated if no info, but the more detail we have the more points we can prove IMO.
