Square Barrel Threading
Hi folks,
I need to pick some brains please.
I've got a Star Model FR Sport 22LR target pistol, it's got a square barrel. Can this type of barrel be threaded to take a suppressor?

Thanks!

Re: Square Barrel Threading
I'm just curious.
I've always been drawn to the "tacticool" side of firearms, so was wondering if it was possible.

Re: Square Barrel Threading
The problem is the elongated front sight post. It's integrated. Great Little pistols. Love mine.

Re: Square Barrel Threading
A square tube/barrel can take a thread just like any other tube/barrel as long as you are able to get a perfect full round thread on it without any gaps and also leaving enough metal (read thickness or meat) between the inside of the barrel and the thread.
I am sure it is possible, but you are going to lose your front sight or need to have it moved..

Re: Square Barrel Threading
Depending on how the front sight is mounted, it could be shortened, cutting the front half of the blade off, to make way for a thread. .22's are normally threaded 1/2" 20TPI (UNF), in SA and GB. The barrel should have enough metal for this, with a decent shoulder, to stop the silencer against. So the project is feasable and should not cost you too much.
The downside is that the Star will look downright ugly, with the thread there. A protective cap could help a bit. But considering the value of the pistol, you might just as well go for it. A supressed 22 pistol makes for lots of fun plinking, without attracting much unwelcome attention. And those FR's are known to be very accurate.
The commonly available 22 silencers are efficient, but very big and heavy, for a pistol. Try to find a compact model, like the NZ-made Manders or similar. Same sound, but less bulk and weight. Another option, would be to have one custom made. But this will cost more. Whatever you choose to do, just consider the sights. If your sights are "blocked off" by the larger diameter silencer, they will be useless. And custom raised sights, might push the price up, to rival a brand new, modern 22 pistol. Think this through properly.
