Anyone fished the vaal river recently

I fished on the river last week for 3 days near denysville we caught about 30 between 2 guys but very small nothing big

Fished above Elgro 2weeks ago. Fishing was sublime. Lots of sighted big carp took the fly aggresively. Yellows in the rapids in healthy condition. Even caught a nice yellow sighted on dry in the eye of a pool.

Happy October for me. Flyfishing for yellows this week-end on the Vaal (5wt) and yellowfin out of Hout Bay (15wt) next week-end. Howzat for both ends of the spectrum?

I remember fishing with a friend about 12-13 years ago when yellows on dry were unheard of.

The sun was going down and we saw midges coming off the water, Zaine changed over to a small dry, can't remember what and within about 2 mins hooks the first yellow on dry that I had ever heard of.
It was one of those WOW, look what I have done moments.

Any fish on dry is great, yellows especially.

A mate of mine fished a big dry or very small popper in the glides. The takes were explosive! Fish breeching to take it. You shit yourself evertime :)
I think the change came when we started fishing winter aand spring for yellows. Previously it was only rapids and after summer rains discolored the water.
At the right time the Vaal is clear and one can have the best ff action available in the world. If only the water quality was better it would rival NZ. I've had days on the Elgro drift where I got 5kg largie on the streamers and multiple 3kg smallies on dry sighted.:D:cool:
