Anyone fished the vaal river recently

Update:
Condition of river? Smelly, reasonably clear, cold, lots of weed except in the really fast runs and level dropping after last gate closed on Friday (I think).
Fish? Plenty of smallmouth in the 1 - 3 kg bracket and the occasional one up to 4.8 which was the largest I heard of. Mainly feeding in the deeper (warmer) fast water. I got broken off by some real unstoppable thugs on 4.5kg tippets. I started fishing with a 5wt on Thursday but wised up on Friday and thereafter 7/8wt worked well.
Some guys targeted largemouths and were reasonably successful.
The strange weather on Thursday with that amazing dust storm was a front of sorts moving in which brought chilly weather but fish were generally still biting but went off the bite at odd times.

Still a good weekend though.

Update: Iphone offered to fishing gods and NO fish.

We went to Eendekuil on Friday and it was chilly and we had a huge dust storm on Thursday evening. No fish were in the rapids. My buddy that I was fishing with said he got 20+ fish only a few days before and this was also confirmed by a few other guys that were also there - they were also stumped and got two fish between 5 guys for the whole day. All in all the fishing was terrible, the conditions were not in our favour.

Spent the better part of today on the Vaal, and has a great day.

Not many fish, hit the water at 8-ish and only started fish landing at 11. All small stuff, largest was 1.5

Water was clear (for the vaal) 17 deg, muddies have started to spawn.

Our count.

My son =1
His buddy = 4 (vaal virgin)
Me = 3

We had to leave at 14:00, and guess when the action started.

I need a shower now, I can smell I've been on the vaal.

Lekker, seems the action is heating up again after the big storm, when we were there the water was also 17deg, the week before it was 20deg and the fish were crazy.

Didnt know you fly fished Peter.
I will be hitting the Vaal on the 2nd, beerfest will sink me this weekend for sure.

I just spent an unproductive week in Moz with the 9WT , heck even St Lucia is 10 times better.
