Current loads FOR MY RIFLE. Looks like this
    woodleigh 450 77,6 gr S365 with a col of 89.5mm 2164fps
    dzombo 450 gr 74,3gr s365 with a col of 89,3mm 2140fps

thats with norma brass and fed 215 primers

do not use these loads in your rifle without testing at lower charges first. Presure is around 47000 psi

    hi,I own a 404 Jeff

please dont take my question wrong, but why do you want to shoot a 450g bullet , the 404 Jeff made its name with a 400g at speeds of between 2200fps and 2300fps.

the rifle performs so well with a 400g bullet.

Hi Rigby the caiiber most propably made its name with speeds in th e 2150 range and lower. Only when RwS in later years pushed the loads a bit did it see the higher velocities. So instead of chashing speed in the 404 , lets say loading a 400 at 2300 which is the norm today , i am more inclined to shoot a heavier for caliber bullet at 2150 as it is balistically superrior to the 400 grain in every way. The norma african Ph range is loaded with the same bullets for the same reasons. Its just better and always fun to play around, even though its a clasic caliber and rifle I dont pitch up to the shooting range with a pith helmet and safari chair- today we have the benefit of better powders, better projectiles etc- manufacturers have realised this such as northfolh and woodleigh.

Rigby, it is a very valid question.

You will probably know that there were some very early reports of the 404 lacking penetration. Well if you look at what the 416 Rigby made it's name with, it was the 410gr bullets. Now if you work out a length to diameter ratio based on that bullet in the Rigby and you apply that same ratio to the 404, then interestingly enough you come out with a 450gr bullet for the 404.

If you look at the normal 400gr bullet in 404 it appears quite short and stubby, where in my opinion the 450gr puts it more in proportion.

But it is all in the name of fun and playing around a bit.

Even a bullet like the 400gr Rhino or Northfork is already longer than a normal softnose and this should already increase the SD and thus penetration of it.

Here is a photo of some of the samples to give you an idea:

I do beleive you might be onto something here! It is not the classic load but should be good alround performers

To support what DwB said. The classic rigby load is a 410 grainer. But I cant think of one manufacturer that loads that? I know Woodleigh makes bullets in that weight. Frankly speaking thats also not keeping with tradition if you are shooting 400s in a rigby. Almost all write ups state that the jeffery was built to copy the 450/400 in a bolt action. The only similarity between the 2 is the foot pounds energy. The 450/400 has a higher sectional density than even the classic 410 rigby load. No wonder it is such a fantastic caliber. 2150 fps with exceptional s.d with a 400 grain bullet. So when the jeffery was designed they got the fps right and obviously the energy. But that is where the similarity stops. The 450 grain addresses the lower s.d issue, increases energy and still recoils less than a Rigby out of a standard length action. The case for a 430-450gr in the 404 jeffery is a very good one

    thanks for the replies .

I will follow the thread. Remember that Woodleigh bullets perform better at a slower speed , faster speeds make them break up.
