Sierra 165gr GameKing SBT .308 recovered bullet
My dad came back from his hunting trip up in KZN I think. Was very dense bush.
He shot a Bluewildebeest and a big old kudu cow.
Both bullets were recovered. Distances shot was quite close, 80m IIRC.
Sierra 165gr SBT loaded at +-2500fps. Will confirm velocity later on.
Weight retention was about 85%. Two recovered bullets weighed 143.5gr and 138.2gr.
Decided to share pics since people always asking about recovered and mushrooming bullets.
He really likes these bullets. So much, that he bought 12 packs before the prices went up
Bluewildebeest was shot while quartering away (if that is the right description) and kudu also heart/lung shot.

Brilliant - the 165 HPBT Gameking is even tougher and is phenominally accurate. I shoot the 150gr Prohunter in my .308 and it is very tough and very accurate.

Re: Sierra 165gr GameKing SBT .308 recovered bullet
The HPBT is not tougher. Well in my case. I took 5 shots a gemsbok with the HPBT doing 2500fps. I got bullet failure with every single shot and the only piece I could recover that wasn't shrapnel, was just the jacket, the core gone. On a neck shot, I only got 3" penetration.
I posted a thread about the HPBT bullets that I used. I also learn't not to shoot neck and head again at a gemsbok, but the HPBT broke up and not one shot penetrated and went all the way through and the most I could find was tiny pieces of shrapnel in the meat.
The pro-hunter is a different story again. Have heard them to be better. I have 180gr Pro-Hunters ready for next year too.
The HPBT was VERY accurate, but broke up in every instance. I shot clover groups at 100m at the farm when I sighted, before going into the field. I shot one Springbok and one Gemsbok. The Springbok was a headshot, below the eye from the front at +-70m.
So for transparency sake, and so that people can make up their own minds, I will not advocate the HPBT ever again. And at 2500fps at the muzzle, I did not load it too fast causing the break up.
If someone else had a different experience, please do share, with some pics!Last edited by ravingDIODE; 26-11-2014 at 13:16. Reason: Spelling..

You don't perhaps know where I can get 165gr SBT bullets or 87gr 243 gamekings.
Sierra game kings are impossible to find.

Raving Diode - I am truly surprised by your response regarding the 165gr HPBT terminal performance. I have had the opposite experience completely. Ah well! But I do agree that the Prohunters are very tough. I shoot everything with Sierra nowadays and I have had nothing but success. The 85gr HPBT in my .243 is the most awesome bullet I have ever come across. My son shoots the 130gr Prohunter in his .270 and the 55gr HPBT in his .222. I also load the 180gr Prohunter in my 300H&H.

Re: Sierra 165gr GameKing SBT .308 recovered bullet
Your experience with the HPBT, do you shoot it in .308 as well?
From the previous thread of mine, it was obvious that the HPBT does very well in other calibers, especially .243 but from what we could gather not so much in .308 and that the SBT was preferred to the HPBT in the 165gr .30 range.. I only shoot .308 and yeah I don't shoot as much as the other hunters here but the one experience where my dad next to me was dropping everything with the SBT made me decide not to use the HPBT again and I shot it out on the range. My dad shot the same weight and caliber in his own gun and his velocity was a bit faster than mine, but difference was him shooting SBT and I HPBT and he laughed at me for wanting to try the HPBT because he told me before the hunt when I did load development that it was going to be crap. I don't know if he knew something I didn't or if he just took a bet and was glad to be right..
