Johannesburg - A farmer has been shot and killed on his Hluhluwe farm in KwaZulu-Natal, the provincial community safety department said on Wednesday.
Police say a group of armed suspects stormed the farm of Terrence Rizzato on Tuesday and forced his employees into a room before robbing them, spokesperson Sipho Khumalo said in a statement.
"The suspects then proceeded to the Rizzato's residence on the farm where they allegedly shot him on the chest. The suspects stole the victim's cash and valuables before fleeing the scene in his bakkie."
Police were investigating, he said.
Transport, community safety and liaison MEC Willies Mchunu condemned the "callous" murder of Rizzato.
"I am deeply shocked by this murder. I find it to be totally abhorrent, senseless and inhumane. We condemn it and we will follow it until there is an arrest and conviction," Mchunu said.
"I am assured that members of the police are working around the clock to ensure that those who are responsible for this cold-blooded murder and attack are brought to justice as soon as possible."
Mchunu reiterated his concerns that the murder of farmers tended to undermine food security and business confidence in the province.
"Once again, we appeal to members of the provincial farming community, including the farmworkers to work collectively to ensure safety and security in this important sector of our economy," said Mchunu.
He also expressed his condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Rizzato.

Re: Farm/Rural attacks 2015
Condolences to the family.
Its seems that there is a syndicate operating out of Ezakheni as the suspects in my father in laws murder case had been apprehended in that area by a joint effort by a private security company and local law enforcement. I truly hope that these guys are found and brought to book and that Justice is served.
It seems that our country is headed the same way as one of our neighboring countries......

Farm murders down, police plans working – Phiyega

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega believes that the police’s safety plans are working, hence the 30% drop in farm murders since 2010.
“It was positive. [Our statistics show that] there was an annual decline since 2003, especially for one financial year [2012-2013],” she told Beeld.
She attributed it to work regarding countrywide safety and communities’ awareness and safety measures.
The police have not released official farm murder figures for seven years, but have kept records, Beeld reported today.
Their figures showed that 271 people were murdered on farms or smallholdings in the past five years.
Farm murders declined by 71 in 2010-2011 to 48 in 2013-2014. The latest figures showed 36 people were murdered between April and December 2014.
The Transvaal Agricultural Union disputed the figures saying that according to their own channels, such as social media, there were at least 63 murders in 2012, 62 in 2013, and 67 in 2014.
Their figures included 45 murders inexplicably left out of police information. Their figures were per calendar year, not financial year.

Why do I get the feeling that it's a case of "If the lips are moving then . . . " ?

Polokwane - The mutilated body of a retired doctor was found on his game farm in Limpopo on Monday, after he was presumably murdered on Saturday.
Netwerk24's Marietie Louw-Carstens reported on Tuesday that Louis-John Botha, 64, is the second farmer in the Waterberg district of Limpopo to be killed this year. Susan Kotze, 76, was murdered on her farm near Lephalale in January.
According to the report, Botha had practised as a doctor in Swartwater for many years. He lived on the farm Gwelo Safaris about 12km from Swartwater.
Limpopo police are not sure exactly how Botha was killed. Trackers and the canine unit are searching the area and looking for clues.
Search
Botha was alone at the lodge over the weekend while his girlfriend visited friends in Pretoria. She became concerned when she was not able to get hold of him on Sunday and called neighbours, who went to his house and noticed there had been a break-in.
Blood was found on the porch and inside the double-storey thatch home. The safe had been opened and items were missing.
Police were called and a search was launched. The body was only found on Monday morning, hidden about 200 metres from the house.
This is the second tragedy to hit the family in less than a year. Botha's son, Louis-John and his girlfriend, Georgina Joubert, were killed in a plane crash near Prieska last April.
Botha, who was divorced, leaves behind two daughters and an elderly mother. The family was too shocked to speak on Monday, his son-in-law said.

Meanwhile, national police commissioner Riah Phiyega believes the police's safety plans are working after their statistics showed a 30% drop in farm murders since 2010, it was reported on Monday.

AfriForum said there has been a gradual increase in farm attacks and farm murders across South Africa.

Durban - A crèche principal in Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal, was tortured with burning plastic during an attack on a farm, Netwerk24 reported on Tuesday.
According to a neighbour, four robbers descended on Armand and Doulina Slabbert's farm at around 14:00 on Saturday.
Armand runs a nursery and Doulina the crèche on the property.
Their neighbour Jess Strumpfer said on Monday the robbers grabbed Doulina and took her inside the house where Armand was showering.
They tied up Armand's disabled brother and took the couple to their bedroom.
They took money and firearms from the safe.
Burning plastic
"They tied Doulina up, set plastic on fire and let it drip on her stomach," said Strumpfer.
This was apparently to force Armand to say where their valuables were kept.
They took the keys to two bakkies but Armand managed to free himself and confront them, forcing them to leave without the bakkies.
Doulina was treated in hospital and later discharged.
The Slabberts were not available at the time of going to press.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said no arrest had yet been made.
