Default Fly fishing for dummies 101

So I'm staying in sabie for 3 days and bought my self a fly fishing rod, my first one ever as I am generally a coast angler.

first, why do they make the hooks so small, the line so thin and my fingers so fat.

so I eventualy get everything attached, bit bleeding fingers as I caught myself a few times just trying to attach everything, walk the 10 steps to the river, now what.

so I start the normal , hook myself in the back, see the fish swim around me, loose my first fly in 10 min, relocate upriver above the Rapids, loose a flip flop, run after it/ swim/ stumble, manage to save him only to now loose the other one, save him and in the process gets a kraaines and now I'm enjoying the rest of my afternoon with a hunters and the serenity of the Sabi river.

You should be drinking flying fish instead:

If you want to make it easier on yourself:
    http://www.sabie.co.za/sport/troutabout/

They can do a quick how to, if you are struggling with your casting.

I cheat sometimes, and use small clips, then I can swap flies with ease.

Hold the rod at a 2o'clock position, your head being 12 o'clock, generally keeps the fly away from your body.

Stop everything you are doing. I'm guessing you are trying for yellows? There is no casting involved in that. What you need to be doing is Czech nymphing. Click here for more information.

This. Good luck! Hope you get a decent yellow.

Once you have yellow fever, good luck explaining that one to the wife. Haha.

    Hi Zodiac,

If you ever come past middelburg you can stop here and I will give you some pointers on casting. Alternatively it would be wise to get some casting tutoring from guys like mavunghana in dullstroom.

But what Proudprado said is true, catching yellows on nymphing techniques such as czech nymphing is the "best" way. Catching them on dry flies (surface floating) is more exciting but more technical/difficult.

I you come past here I'll get you into some bass ;)

    Cheers
    George
