Premium, but still affordable ammo recommendation
This saturday I bought Federal Hydra Shok 124gr ammo. Now I know by now you should shoot at least 200 rounds of the ammo you intend to EDC to test for reliability etc. And they are not the best choice But at R450.00 for just 20 rounds I am having second thoughts as to my purchase.
What premium ammo is more afordable and available from time to time?
I do want to shoot on the range with what I EDC also. Currently I do this with S&B ammo, but do want something slightly more premium, as most of you EDC premium ammo. I don't shoot every weekend, therefore I am prepared to use a bit more expensive ammo for the range as well. But not at R450.00 for just 20 rounds!! Or should I just stick with ''good enough'' S&B JHP 115gr ammo for range use and EDC?

Re: Premium, but still affordable ammo recommendation
I carry my Winchester Rangers 124gr +P+ for 9mm.
I paid R495 for 50 and it has a good reputation behind it, and it works well in my pistol.
At R10/shot it's expensive but not as bad as R450 for 20 :D
To iterate, I a) buy carry ammo, b) test it extensively, c) then carry it.
d) When it is time to replace it, I shoot it, and take another stack from the safe and then carry that.
Rinse and repeat c and d every 6 or so months.

There is no need to practice with your carry ammo, especially if that's going to cut down on either the quality of the carry ammo and?or the quantity of practice.
Function test properly and then replace regularly.

Also, I'll rather carry properly tested and trusted S&B JHP's than untested Federal Hydra Shok all day long.

Federal Hydra Shoks have been tested.. They are just old technology. In the 80's era they were fairly well used by many american agencies, including the FBI if I am not mistaken.. Please correct if I'm wrong.
There are way better options today, such ad the previously mentioned Ranger T's. I would stick with those and leave the Federal ammo be.

Buy ammo premium EDC ammo you can afford. Function test it. And keep shooting your handgun with range ammo so you are familiar with your firearm and can use it properly.
