Punt guns, used for commercial harvesting of ducks and geese were banned in the USA in the USA in 1860 to preserve wild stocks, a survey in 1995 in the UK showed around 50 punt guns still in use. The bigger ones could take out up 50 birds a shot and up to 500 a day. The bores on some of these guns were up to 2" and fired a pound of shot. The smallest of them were 2ga.

I think the biggest cartridges commercially made then were 2ga ... the bigger guns were percussion, the equivalent of a cartridge for a gun with a 2" barrel would be interesting !

Biggest shotgun shell is a 122mm shell fired from the M1 Abrams tank, holds 1100 ten mm tungsten balls, developed to wipe out half a platoon with two shells. Apparently used very effectively in Iraq war, effective up 700 meters .......
