He had great taste in rifles. He must have been a gentleman!

    What happened to the rifles?

Update: Since the .500 Jeffery 3D Lost wax cast project is moving to phase 2 : Casting in steel, I am fortunate to have now available a magnum bottom metal/trigger guard and magnum magazine box that converts a Standard Mauser 98 action into a Magnum action.....I will now be using one of these casts as a conversion for my 8x68S (.323) Mauser longer range heavy bullet flat shooting hunting rifle on large antilope.
Here is a document about this venerable caliber by Harold Wulff.

Update: Due to unforeseen circumstances I have to put the .500 Jeffery build on hold until 2019 February . Therefore I am commencing with the 8x68S build I wanted to do for the past two years already. ( input/comments of members are welcome)

I do have all the components :
    Obendorf Mauser action MOD 98,

German claw mounts and telescope rings

    Classic V-Express/flip up island sights,

    Front sight /ivory bead,

    American Black Wall nut ,

    Pacmyer recoil pad,
    RCBS re-loading dies ,
    75 x RWS Brass ...

    What I need is a :
    Double set triggers
Barrel,: I want a Shilen barrel, 29" inc
Mill out a magnum magazine box to ensure I can re-load to a OAL of 91mm.
This will ensure an optimum use of the potential of this caliber.
Will need to do a small amount of work on the feeding ramps...
Photos of how I want the stock to look..I am working towards a real classic design :

Update : Members as pointed out , I need to put the .500 Jeffery build on the back burner until February 2019...
I will commence with the 8x68S build..
I cut the stock from a nice piece of Wall nut Johan Greyling gave me today. Here are photos of two stocks that I will use. Yhe one stock I will be building the 8x68S on..the other stock will be kept for any future build, I am thinking of building a 6x45 caliber or a 6.5 x 55 Swede ...but that will be for much later..now it will be focusing on the 8x68S build..

    What I have:
Excellent , good grade Wall -nut stock.
    MOD 98 Obendorf Mauser action
    Pacmeyer recoil pad
Classic flip up sights with four pop-up leaves
    Double set trigger
A lot of 8x68S RWS brass
    Re-loading dies
    Front sight /bead

All I need is the 8x68S barrel, at least 28" inch long...Johan said a 30" barrel is too long...he even want me to go down to a 26" inch barrel , pointing out the rifle will be more accurate..
    Here are the photos:
This is what I am working towards , to build a sleek /slim stock like a Mannlicher Schoenauer type of stock..

    Classic design:

    This is a straight stock:
I will be working to a long slim design but will have enough wood along the action`s side with two re-coil lugs ..

Nice Gert! Why do you want such a long barrel as a matter of interest?

Daan, my 8x57JS Mauser has a 29.1" inch barrel, it really look good , giving it a slender /sleek design ...There has been a type of rifle called the Mauser Long Rifle , it is described by Harold Wolf in an article written by him. These Mausers were also known as the African Mauser, it has a long hexagonal barrel with classic v-express sights and front sights, double set triggers and a barrel band. I want to build such a rifle , a classic African Long Rifle as described by Harold Wolf.
Here is a photo I copied from Harold Wolf`s article ...The African Long Rifle is the top rifle in the picture:

Hi Gert, thanks for the article, it sure romanced me!! A friend's 7x57 Mauser has a 28' hexagonal (think its a hexagon and not an octagon) barrel on it. Don't think original barrel but replaced at some point plus the double trigger set. Beautiful rifle and a pleasure to shoot with almost zero perceived recoil!

I agree, they do not make them like that anymore. This is the reason I want to build the African Long Mauser in a 8x68S version in a real classic style. I am buying a hexagon barrel from a barrel maker here in South Africa who makes them for a reasonable price. I will be commencing putting the different components together shortly...I need to drive through to the company making the barrels to have a look at the barrel making process.
