This is wrong. A murder docket should only ever be opened if there is a reasonable suspicion of murder.

If not, then an inquest docket must be opened for the circumstances surrounding the death to be investigated.

First off, well done young man!

On the legal issue: A policeman friend once told me, that it might be better to get charged with murder right away, as the charges will be investigated and you will (usually?) be found not guilty. End of the matter.
If only an inquest is held, you could always (much) later be charged with murder. Later, with the facts and evidence having faded with time, proving your innocence might be more difficult.
