Misdaad is nie “onder beheer” nie – geweldmisdade in Gauteng het vir ’n tweede agtereenvolgende jaar skerp gestyg, toon nuwe misdaadsyfers van die polisie wat uitgelek het.

Die misdade wat Jan en alleman die meeste vrees – moord, motorkapings en huisrooftogte – gedy terwyl die publiek toenemend sy vertroue in die polisie verloor.
Die uitgelekte syfers vergelyk die eerste tien maande van die 2014-’15-boekjaar (1 April 2014 tot 31 Januarie vanjaar) met die ooreenstemmende tien maande in die 2013-’14-boekjaar.
Motorkapings het in die eerste tien maande van die 2014-’15-boekjaar met 14,4% toegeneem teenoor 2013-’14 s’n. Motorkapings het reeds in die 2013-’14-boekjaar met 22,5% teenoor die vorige boekjaar toegeneem.
Huisrooftogte het met 11,5% toegeneem, terwyl dit verlede jaar met 12,6% gestyg het.
Ook die moordsyfer het met 10% gestyg, terwyl dit in die vorige jaar met 11,2% toegeneem het.
Daarby het vragmotorkapings skielik skerp begin optel. In die 2014-’15-tydperk het dit met 54,5% toegeneem na ’n totaal van 689 aangemelde sake. In die vorige jaar het dit met 4,4% gegroei en twee jaar gelede met 18,3%.

Comparing the first 10 months of the 2014/2015 accounting year (1 April 2014 to 31 Jan 2015) with the corresponding period in the 2013-2014 accounting year :

Hijacking increased 14.4%. They had already increased in the previous period by 22.5%.
House Robberies increased by 11.5% compared with an increase in the previous period of 12.6%.
Murders increased by 10% over the previous period's increase of 11.2%.

The figures paint a pretty damning picture.

I am not attempting to soften the blow here, but it is difficult drawing clear conclusions from the data because we don't know all the underlying reasons for the increase in certain crimes. Are they genuinely more prevalent, which I can believe, or are they just being reported more frequently by the public, or both?

The fact is, regardless of the increase in incidents, we know for a fact that our absolute levels of violent crime are damn high in this country, no matter which way you slice it. Are we surprised?

But, But look the figures are down from last year. See how the various increases in reported crime were lower than the previous period.

not really, they'll blame the increase in private firearms licenses.

We have become so accustomed to the idea that crime is suppose to rise. We look at figures and compare it to the previous year and think that is ok it is just as much as last year. Crime should be dropping not increasing. 10% this year is not the same as 10% last year it is 10% on top of lastyears 10%
