Default Re-loading data for the Westley Richards Martini Henry .450/577

Hallo Members, I would really like to hear about your loads for the Martini Henry rifle? Do you have brass available if not how do you go about to fire form brass?

Gert, one can buy turned brass from one of the gun shops in Johannesburg or Pretoria. It has a reduced capacity due to the production process, but it still works. Pulled brass with original specs case volume has to be imported from England IIRC.

24 Guage solid brass cases can be bought from CBC - Google 24 guage and you will get details. Ken Stewarts old firm in Pietersburg has been taken over by new owners and they can make drawn cases.

24 Gauge brass is however about the same price as buying MH brass.

My friend had turned brass made by a guy in Jhb, I think it was from one of the guys at Blunderbuss.
The downside to reloading for the MH is that you need (preferably) to use black powder, and with the price it's sitting at, it's a really expensive rifle to shoot.

www.midwayusa.com/.../magtech-shotshell-hulls-24-gauge-2-1-2-brass-...The turned cases crack after a while and dont last that many shots. They also have a much reduced capacity.

Oom Ken's business was taken over by Hansie Minnaar, at 082-627 5011.

I have used both the turned and the drawn cases, and it is true that the drawn cases are preferable.

I loaded 80 gr of Sannadex, or 70 gr of black powder behind a 450 gr cast bullet.

Before I had my MH dies, I "neck sized" the cases, by just pushing it into the.458 WM die. I didn't have a shell holder, so I tapped them out with a steel rod. I now have MH dies, but I still do the minimum of resizing, otherwise there is a lot of gas leakage into the shooters face.

Make sure about the depth of the primer pocket. For some reason the turned cases require a large pistol primer, while the drawn cases used large rifle primers. You really don't want a primer standing proud when closing a tilting block action!

Wash your cases with clean green or Sunlight liquid soon after shooting, as you would your rifle. Sannadex is a bit more forgiving, but BP leaves an acid residue that destroys your valuable cases.
