In a lot of other countries the police force has a very good starting package and can become a very healthy sum after a promotion or two.

I have certainly looked at it over here and may complete my app once the wife returns from maternity leave.
Agreed it is very sad. So you might apply for SAPS when your wife returns from leave?

Serious though: why would you want to do that?
Well someone has got to do it. We need good operators. Crime destroys countries. We need a decent police force as much as we need a decent work force and decent fire brigade and decent emergency personal. It all works together. Without good cops the citizens are put at risk. The Special Task Force is the most elite police unit. They fight crime the ordinary police can't handle. They assist the police on the ground and carry out SWAT operations. That's why I want to do it.

Well will be a citizen in a couple of months, you'd be surprised, its very busy, not much violent crime though, which is kinda nice!
Its very diverse though, there are a lot of areas you can specialise in which keeps it interesting.

In the SAPS, you pay tax, medical aid and union fee plus alot of smaller amounts for sports club, widow and orphans and and and.
You receive an extra R900 pm for housing
You receive R400 pm danger allowance ( that is what your life is worth )
You will not receive overtime ( unless you very lucky, but don't bank on it )
Promotion, if you white male, forget it. I've been in the rank since 1999, with a National Diploma, no black marks against my name.

    Good luck dude...

Dave, let Oom Kreef drop some knowledge for you.

Job satisfaction goes out the window very quickly when you cant afford to fix your car or send your boy on that rugby tour his buddies are going on.

You need to find a balance. Im not saying dont do it because its seems you have a romantic idea of the job and a big itch that needs scratching. But at least consider a way to scratch the itch....and them move on.

Is it true that the STF aren't paid any more than a regular police officer?

Pretty shocking. More needs to be done to attract career policemen, there is no doubt. The personnel involved that put in the hard yards every day out of pure dedication and do the job right have my admiration and respect.
