Police in Eldorado Park arrested a father and his son for possession of illegal firearms, police uniform and blue lights yesterday evening. This happened after members on routine patrol spotted a vehicle with a blue light and a police cap on the dashboard. They stopped the vehicle and discovered that it was not a police vehicle.
On questioning a 23 old man, he alleged that the vehicle belongs to his father. As the police were proceeding to the police station to detain the suspect, his father came and produced his appointment certificate and identified himself as a Warrant Officer. At a later stage it was discovered that he is a former reservist who enlisted in the police in the early 90s. He was arrested and police proceeded to his house and searched it. The following items were seized during the search:

  • One 2.2 Winchester Rifle
  • One Mossberg Shotgun
  • One 357Magnum Revolver
  • Ammunitios: 34 R5 rounds, 560 Revolver rounds, 67 SSG rounds of shotgun, 49 rounds of shotgun compression.
  • Uniform: One field dress trouser, four ( 4) SAPS T-shirts, two (2) SAPS Golf shirts, one (1) SAPS drymack, two (2) SAPS bunny jackets, one (1) ceremonial police trouser, one(1)field dress trouser, one boiler SAPS suit jacket, Three (3) pairs of SAPS socks, Four (4) field dress Saps caps, one ceremonial cap, two police ranks (inspector and sergeant), one (1) police belt and two name tags.
  • Other: police torch and rifle holster.

Only a shotgun licence was produced. The vehicle, a VW Polo, has been impounded.
They are due to appear in Protea Magistrate Court within 48 hours while further investigations are continuing.
