Default Re: Red dot sight on a hunting rifle?

My brother used a Tasco Propoint on his 375H&H for years. He was quick, I remember I once almost walked into him when hunting together when he took a warthog. I say almost because he fired before I walked into him or saw the hog. He doesn't use it any more, I believe part of the reason is not having eyes like a hawk any more. Hunting at longer distances more often is another part. I do suspect having money for more rifles with more specialist applications contributes more than he'd care to admit.

I have been looking at possibly fitting a red dot scope to my .303 Lee Enfield as a close range "pig gun" for walking and stalking hunts. Still trying to see what is out there, any advice for this type of application will be appreciated.

I have a Holosun 510C on my pcc and if I put the center green dot on the top rim of a paper plate at 100m, all the holes are in the plate. You can also use the outer ring as a reference. I think it can be done with some limitations and self control.
The 510c is a lot faster than my Vortex 1>6.

I have one on my mossberg 12g for pigs and works a dream out to 50m. Havent tried it further than that.

I also have one on my 458win mag for guiding, and again, works like a dream, although this is only at 4-12m shooting.
Target aquisition and speed of quick shooting is noticeably faster

I have an Aimpoint Micro H1 with a 2moa dot on my .416 rem mag and it works really well for quick shots and for general hunting out to ±150m. I have also used a Lynx red dot on a 9.3x62 and a .375 H&H for hunting and it worked well at bushveld hunting distances. My longest shot was a blue wildebeest at 180m.

For me a red dot is faster than either a scope or open sights and more accurate than open sights. It can not compete with a scope at longer ranges and because it does not have any magnification it does not work as well as a scope in bad light or deep shade.

One way to find out if you have astigmatism is to buy a reflex sight. Had clients use mine and some complained of a blurry or Starburst dot. Try one out first.

That said they work well within their boundaries.

I don't see the dot as perfectly round but it does not really seem to make a difference.

Hmm, I don't like what I'm reading here. My green dot has got a bit of a blur around it, not very bad but it looks like my dot is a bit out of focus. I have to go read up a bit. Thanks for waking me up. Eish

Fitted an Aimpoint on my .458 Lott too. It works well.

I also have serious astigmatism that is corrected with prescription glasses, however the dot is never 100% without slight starburst effect in my specific case. Without glasses though, it is just impossible to use the sight.
