Re: Shotgun for self defense
Running a shotgun effectively is much harder than running a handgun.

Re: Shotgun for self defense
To investigate a noise you can conceal a pistol, with a shotgun you may pick up trouble should you go look for that bump in the night and confront your neighbor looking for his cat while carrying your shotgun? I do agree a shotgun may be more effective but is way less practical than a pistol.

A shotgun is great for SD. If you happen to have it in your hands when things go south.
That's what handguns are for. Keeping on your side for when things go south. If it's in the safe, it may as well be on the moon, to quote T.Sent electronically, thus not signed.

Re: Shotgun for self defense
No one can make the decision for you whether to buy a handgun or a shotgun.
Personally I'd buy a handgun first and shotgun second. Shotgun is a great sd weapon if you life on a farm or out of town.
As for pumps look at:
Winchester 1300
Rem 870
SAR dashprod (tacshac and dave sheer I believe stock them.
Mossberg.
Well thats what I can think of at the moment.

Re: Shotgun for self defense
With all due respect chaps, I am happy with my decision and will be buying a pump action shotgun. If anyone else would like to chime in re. shotguns that I should be considering, please do so.

Mossberg 500
Just get specialized training then. Contrary to popular believe shotguns are not just point and click. There is a lot more to stuff up.

Re: Shotgun for self defense
Shotguns are heavy on user input to keep running. Not only for shot to shot workings that some other systems lack, but keeping them topped up properly and using them effectively. Also they require specific ammunition. What works in mine may not work in yours.
Flight Control wads, when you can get them, are probably your best bet for extended range accuracy. Other than that expect to get quite a few brands and test them out.
