Default Ellisras FireArms Festival 29 August 2015-Bullers Barstids on the run!

Doc Willie has confirmed that this years Ellisras Firearms Festival will be on the 29 of August 2015.

It is a great event and lots of fun and friends are made.

Sports adventure shooting runs a handgun stage for the Festival and of course participate in the Boer Brit shoot as as the much reviled and feared "Bullers Barstids"

I would be grateful for any volunteers who could accompany us to help run the range, doing admin etc.

This offer is extended to any fellow Gunsiter too.

We would depart on the 28th & return on the 30th.

Please email me craig@tacqm.co.za if you need more info.

    Cheers
    Camo

Buller’s Barstid’s departed JHB at 09h30 on the Friday and finally made it to the Lemetford Shooting Range at about 15h00.
There was a quick planning session and then we set about building the range. To avoid the monotony of having to continually re-patch targets we used the Steel Silhouettes as used by Sports adventure shooting .

This is a real time saver and is fun for the participants as the get instant feedback as to a hit or a miss.
The whole idea is that Sports adventure shooting supports the Firearms Festival, which I believe in its 17th year.
Sas runs the handgun range as Ellisras is “long gun” territory and there is a definite need to expose the good folks to the safe use of firearms AND give them an opportunity to find out what they do not know about operating a handgun.

This done we Buller’s Barstid’s moved onto the B.O.M.A. also known as the British Officers Meeting Area for a Braai and Cold beers under an amazingly red sunset. We even allowed our Marxist “Joiner” to have a beer with us ;-)

The sound of the Cannon heralded the opening of the Festival. We took our place at the Pro Amm 3 shot grouping and tried our best for a sub20mm group. Dirk777 had the best grouping of 25mm Iirc.

Shortly thereafter our handgun range opened for business. It was a simple COF running from Left to right and the shooter having to engage 4 steel silhouettes with 2 shots each. This was modified to 5 shots for those with revolvers.

It got very busy during the day and the RO’s had to keep their eyes open the whole time. Many shooters were totally new to the handgun shooting scene and most were not even familiar with the range commands.

At the end of the day the winning time was in the region of 12 seconds. We calculated that 11 kg of bullets had gone downrange, ranging from .22lr through to 357 Magnum.

A 150 shooters came through our range, some re-entering more than 3 time as competition amongst the locals was stiff.
Occasionally we would shut down the range and then show the shooters the effects of the spalling from the steel silhouettes to emphasise the need for ear protection.

It was extremely hot and dry, the soft beach sand as usual made the short dash of the shooter much longer J

At around 15h00 we closed the range in anticipation of the Boer Brit Shoot. This is a really exciting event, and Buller’s Barstid’s had not performed to well in the last 2 years.

Nonetheless Dick (Type56) , , 777 (FN), Mag (LM4) and myself (K31) presented ourselves for duty.

The team was on form and within 21 seconds we had our targets down and the to the cries of “help n bietjie daar” helped our opponents finish off their remaining plates. It really was exhilarating to compete and of course win.

During one of the events a bunny came hopping down the range: Nobody fired a shot at what was a very tempting target!
