It doesn't really matter all that much, since pistols are only rarely used in our SANDF. SF will be the exception to this rule. Also, the many generals' bodyguards etc. will have better pistols. But very few officers will carry a pistol, and then often only as a badge of rank. Same goes for MP's and RP's, the pistol is a badge of authority. So it does not really matter if it works or how well. There are never any reports in the media (or the gripevine) of any action or incidents involving handguns.

Sport shooting with handguns is probably not very high on the agenda in the current army either.

Financial constraints will prevent any new purchases, except if there is a deal "too good to pass up" on (or under) the table.

I think the old Stars will serve on for many more years, at least untill JZ pays back the money he abused for his private mansion.

The South Coast Commando were issued 6 Stars, in the late '60s, four of which would not cycle and were returned to Natal Command. About that time, I was coerced by some SAP friends to escort the then State President, Jim Fouche through a display of Com Bloc weapons, in aid of the Mozambique Soldiers Fighting Fund, in Durban City Hall. During the tour, I asked the SP, who had been the Minister of Defence, why South Africa was not making the Browning Hi Power under licence. His reply still stuns me "I would have had to guarantee a run of 10,000", to me a paltry number. At that time imported P35s were retailing for R80 !!

Call each and every dealer you can find. With some you will have to visit them personally. Most dealers have a box or more full of old mags somewhere under the counter.
