Re: AK Type 101
I have a Norinco AK101 too, love it! Had to do a bit of tweaking to get a scope properly mounted on it, but otherwise no issues.

Bought mine at the end of last year, paid around R10000 if I remember correctly.

Re: AK Type 101
Maybe you llistened to the wrong people?
Seriously, yes AK types are very rugged. But with the abuse they get here in Africa, even the toughest don't last forever. I think, the typical AK user here (not sport shooters!), just dumps a broken specimen, and gets a newer one. I have seen a few that were really well beyond repair...
But I do like (love?) the modern upgraded AK's, like my own LM. And I like the AR-types too. None of them will ever surpass my esteem of the FN-FAL. That's just a biased, personal opinion.

Re: AK Type 101
Didn't make any modifications to the firearm itself, but being a rugged AK the frame and the barrel isn't properly aligned, so when I put the side mount and scope on, it wasn't hitting target at 100m (I licenced it under dedicated status so need to be able to shoot at that distance), even after maxing out the scope adjustments. I had the side mount bent slightly to accommodate the misaligned frame and barrel, now hits target and gets good grouping.

Re: AK Type 101
Both my husband and I have one. My husband has a red dot for his with a dust cover mount (not as secure as the side mount cos it tends to move) for short distance, and I have the side mount with scope for long distance.
