    147gr ammo tends to lose less velocity from short barrels than the lightweight or midweight stuff.

    Its for two reasons. One is controlability in a smaller lighter harder kicking gun. Two and kinda related, heavier bullets loses less velocity in shorter barrels. But mainly the controlability when you consider how well Ranger and HST perform.

    Last question where does that then leave a compact gun? Some where on the fence I guess...

    That and I expect that you probably have more muzzle energy in the first place out of a short barrel.

    Nope energy involves velocity squared as I recall so is higher with the lighter faster rounds, not that energy is anything to worry about really.

    HST is sold out. I still have some of the Gold Dot , the Rangers and the Critical Duty.

    Now that is where the momentum comes into the picture, as opposed to some incorrect calculations posted recently confusing momentum with energy

    A larger mass is capable of absorbing more energy and carrying it further than a smaller mass.

    Which is why the velocity fall off in lighter bullets is more than in slower heavier bullets - more mass in the equation mv^2 for the heavier bullets.
