Interesting article. As he said, trust but verify, so I hope someone can take it further in the same way that "proved" lemishine to be bit much more than citric acid hemihydrate.

My only observation is that when somebody markets and promotes a lubricant but will not publish a full chemical datasheet for that lubricant, you should perhaps approach it with some caution (it is not axiomatic though that the product is not suitable to the application). This is especially so given that all the major lubricants manufacturers (such as Shell) publish full chemical datasheets for the products so that engineers can ensure they are selecting the correct product for the correct application. As you can imagine, this is particularly important when it comes to automotive and aeronautic applications. I note however also, paging through my armourers manual for the FN MAG, that Fabrique Nationale give specific chemical properties with which a lubricant must ideally comply for use in the FN MAG. If somebody does not publish the chemical properties, how would one know whether it complies with those specifications or not?

If anybody is interested, I will place the Fabrique Nationale specified chemical properties somewhere on this website and people can then hunt around for themselves to see whether they can find a compliant lubricant. For what it is worth though, I do note that my publication of the armourers manual is one of the older ones.

R250.00 for 60ml Fireclean vs R46.00 for 2000ml of Canola Oil...
    That's R4.16/ml vs <R0.03/ml ;)

    From Fireclean's FaceBook page:

We would like to address recent false or misleading allegations that range from simply misguided to false, defamatory, and libelous. These attacks have been made by competitors and others that paint our product in a false or misleading light. The allegations do not focus on actual performance or relevant tests, and draw a misleading picture.

Of course, while it may be canola oil, none of this proves that canola oil is not a very good gun lubricant. After all, it has been endorsed by many people, including the inimitable Larry Vickers.

But now you also know why no chemical properties datasheet was published.

PUBLISH THE FULL CHEMICAL PROPERTIES DATASHEET AND DISABUSE THE ENTIRE PUBLIC THEN!
