Default Talk to me about tents

    Some advice needed

Ok, I'm not a camper but taking the wife and kids away on a weekend is starting to get "somewhat" expensive (R5000 for 3 nights... local place with Warm water springs for the kids)

I have the basic stuff to make a stay comfortable, except a tent. So now I am tent shopping.

I have been offered a second hand (used once) Campmore 5 sleeper dome tent for a good price. Its one of those nylon jobbies (not too high 1,75 - I am nearly 2m tall), but its got 2 "rooms". I am not however convinced that this one will do the job long term.

I would like a ripstop tent, but those are hellishly expensive. R3500 for a basic one, a 1 roomer. Bigger and better goes to 2 x Type 56 prices and more.

But then again, buy right the 1st time.

Does anybody have a Campmore tent, how does it stand up in wind and rain? (with my luck it will rain)

    looking forward to your responses

If you're in the market for buy right 1st time, you need to look at canvas options. Bouwer Broers in PTA stocks an impressive selection of several options already set up you can check before buying. I've got a "thicker" nylon job which I believe is sufficient for a few years' worth of use, and I knew that when I bought it.

    Also, look here: https://www.onedayonly.co.za/outwell...om-tent-3.html

Canvas are the best tent option.

R5000 for a weekend camping trip. Thats seriously high. You should come camp in the cape area. We went to Proteafarm.co.za couple of months back. Actually feels like years at this point. Very, very nice place. Lots of dams and tractor rides up mountain. With Potjiekos made for you.

    Thanks for the feedback guys

I think I misled you with that comment shooty.

Sleeping in a chalet or one of their "safari" tents costs R5k. Not the camping spot.

We have been camping since the kids where very young about 8 years now. I have a Howling moon tent I think the Sierra model it has good hight, three separate rooms and can house 2 queen size bed with an additional open section, the rip stop is lighter than full canvas set up takes a bit longer that a dome type

Canvas tents will last but are heavy and bulky. Ripstop are a good alternative especially if you have space and weight constraints. I like the modular dome type setups whereby you can join to dome tents together with a single flysheet for a living area as it is very practical having the option to quickly put up one dome for short overnight stays or if you are on your own.
