Re: The second Great 1880 era Black powder hunt expedition at Weltevreden 2016
We want to do a few more crafts than last year. We will try to build a structure where we will be able to process thongs ( brei rieme) we will cut from the hides of the animals we shoot. There will definitely be a sausage filler from the 1880 era...so we will use the intestines of the impala and kudu we hunt to make some droee wors...
Forging will be another element we want to add to the hunt. A few more articles resembling the 1880 era may be found in the camp this year. We really strive to get the hunt as authentic as possible.

Re: The second Great 1880 era Black powder hunt expedition at Weltevreden 2016
Update:
I bought leather stitch/sewing needles, a book on how to hand stitch leather , this will come in handy when making my first pair of "velskoene".
My first 1880 era shirt is nearly completed courtesy of my good wife and sister in law.
I will be able to upload photos tomorrow .

I will make use of a Pederzoli .50 Inline black powder rifle as well....
The copper /brass sausage filling machine will be build within the following two weeks...here is a photo of the original sausage filling machine in the Swellendam Museum...

Gert, totally off the topic of the post but chat to Glen McGill from Oudtshoorn. He hunts with a salvaged 3 band Snider that someone took an angle grinder to. He saved it and it's now a, somewhat shorter 3 band Enfield. Anyway he is very much a BP fundi too and this stuff you guys are doing are right up his alley.
Might be able to scrounge up some trinkets from him.Last edited by CorditeCrazy; 02-04-2016 at 18:59.

Cordite Crazy
Herman Nel will be hunting with an original Martini Henry Snider...I really am going to ask him if I may hunt with his Snider one of the eight days we are going to hunt ...I really hope to be able to shoot something with his snider....Ruan and me need to practice shooting the black powder rifles we are going to use the next two or three weeks ....I have previously communicated with Glen Mcgill....I hope to ask him to join us on one of these 1880 era Black powder hunts...
To put the hunt in perspective ...the hunting aspect...Willie Barnard ask the members who participate in the hunt to come to the party and at least shoot two kudu cows, three impala and three warthog ...this is the minimum quota ..expected from us by Willie Barnard....so we really are going to hunt extremely hard to try and fill the quota....and some more..the last two days we are allowed to hunt for ourselves ..pay our own game we shoot....I will then take my 8x57 JS and my 404 Jeffery with to hunt the last two days for my own biltong and table fair...
